Getting married or moving in together means making an important decision: Merge your money or keep things separate?

There was a time when ‘I do’ automatically meant ‘we share,’ but joint bank accounts have become less of the default. More than half of Gen Z and 34% of millennials in a couple keep their finances totally separate, according to a recent Bankrate survey.

So how do you decide? Maintaining separate accounts may feel safer, but a joint account could be an anchor for shared goals — or kickstart the conversations you’ve been avoiding. And it’s not an either/or choice.
