 What most people are relatively ignorant about is that this was during the #ColdWar era, and even though this was there was no war declared, so the pedestrian mentality has always referred to this time as "Peacetime".

But many that were serving the military at that time, including cold-war historians do not refer to this era has Peacetime. If anything it was called a "Cold Peace" -  Meaning it was a time where world leaders and military personnel were running with tensions very high and possibility of War looming.
 Russian leaders in military had been saber-rattling, threatening to start World War 3 by sending their military forces charging through the Fulda Gap on the border of Russia and Germany, to invade that part of Europe. 
 I'm somewhat of a cold-war historian myself. Although an amateur one, admittedly. 
But I know what I'm talking about.  There are more qualified historians on the subject that have verified what I'm discussing here.  As well as some that have served during that same era that also have verified it.
 I think it's important that all these years later, People have a better understanding.
The fact that Elvis was serving as an Army Scout right along that #FuldaGap border during that timeframe has often been lost on many people not realizing he was serving in one of the most dangerous, volatile parts of the world where Army Scouts, doing exactly the same thing Elvis was doing, had been known to have Russian riflles aimed at them from other side of the border. 
 Even Elvis's manager, the colonel was not fully aware of this. Most Americans were not aware either.
But Elvis was. He knew the threats, the risks.
Hell, the #Russian Armies knew it
The Soviet press was talking about it, (almost mockingly),  about how the US military was dumb enough, or crazy enough to have their most famous soldier serving within their grasp to be captured or even killed.
 It almost looked to the Russians, like the US Army was dangling Elvis as a carrot, to see If they would come after him. 
 Elvis could have requested to serve somewhere else, but in a less dangerous area. 
But he fully embraced it, willing to get as close to the front borderlines as his fellow soldiers, while they were out on patrols. 
  Many times Elvis repeatedly turned down opportunities that would have could have been considered special treatment. 
Some cases Elvis could have got away with it and many others would not have even known. However Elvis' #integrity was such that he simply would quietly, respectfully, push back , pointing out that - "it would not be fair to my fellow soldiers serving their country bravely and legitimately, while while I'm given a soft, cushy, safe assignment elsewhere".
 All Elvis had to do was make one phone call to his manager telling him what really was (militarily) going on behind the scenes, and asking colonel Parker to -"Get me the hell out of here!". 
And you better believe the colonel would have done it, or at least tried.
(Colonel Parker would have swallowed his cigar had he known his meal-ticket was serving so dangerously close to a military enemy that literally in some cases was no more than a 100 yards away from him across the border, with armed rifles looking for American soldier Scouts driving jeeps. American soldier scouts like Elvis)
But Elvis made a personal choice that if all hell broke loose he was going to be right there with his fellow soldiers, Standing with them to fight or defend. 
 There were times when many soldiers would hear superior officers requesting help for Optional or elective assistance around the Base.
 Since these requests were not Mandatory, some soldiers would walk away pretending not to hear the requests.
But Elvis would be quick to raise his hand and say "I'll stay late or come in early in the morning, whatever is needed to help out if you need extra help".
 There were times they found Elvis alone by himself in a maintenance area working on repairs to equipment, or cleaning something up, when it was not requested of him and no one else had offered to help.
 Elvis didn't have to do these things. 
But he did. 
 He took the Army training drills and field maneuvers very serious.
 On one serious occasion Elvis saved a fellow soldier that almost stepped on and explosive device on the ground.  
A Field Officer (Ira Jones) witnessed it, said he was certain the soldier was unaware, and about to be severely injured, or worse.
But he was too far away to get to him in time to stop it from happening.
 And there wasn't even enough time to Yell.
 Out of nowhere he said Elvis saw what was about to happen.
And Fortunately Elvis was closer, close enough he came flying with a sideways body-check into the other soldier sending the man sideways, landing on the ground, right before his foot stepped on the explosive device.
Sgt Jones said Elvis' bravery & quick thinking literally saved someone from going to the hospital..... or worse, that day.
 No one has ever written about this or talked about it.
And again, remember he was doing these things while also serving in one of the most dangerous parts of the world 
 To be clear Elvis's military service was no joke, no soft walk in the park. 
 Aside from all of that, Officer Taylor had time to spend one-on-one time with Elvis sometimes having serious thought-provoking conversations.
